Our designer, Tim Ord

"For me design is the art of subtraction: when nothing more can be removed the design will reveal itself." Industrial designer, Tim Ord, graduated from Wellington polytechnic in 1984 and even then, storage and shelving were his main focus. Tim has now been designing modern furniture and accessories for over 20 years. Some of his pieces, such as the Tokyo Shelving Unit is still selling strongly after 14 years and have already become classics. Tim has the ability to create simple modern designs, which do not age in the face of current trends.

When Tim opened his own retail store, Urban Furniture, in Kingsland, Auckland, and demand for his designs quickly outstripped supply. In response to the high demand and the obvious need to produce and sell his designs for the wholesale market, Tim was forced to shut up shop and went on to set up Urban Office in 1998. Tim’s design philosophy is centered on his love of clean, simple, modern lines.

Tim’s designs focus on strength through simplicity and this is evident in the uncluttered appeal of his finished products. Tim's careful use of different materials creates simple designs of a lasting quality. His pieces have a modern style, which work equally well together or separately.
